Ukrainian Refugees Experience Japanese Culture

Kimono dressing

Four months after the invasion of Ukraine began.

A Japanese culture workshop for Ukrainian refugees was held in Higashi Ward, Nagoya, attended by 15 people who normally study Japanese, and included a kimono dressing experience.

Natalia Sakakibara, Japan-Ukraine Cultural Association said "We held this event because the displaced people wanted to learn more Japanese or learn more about Japan."

The theme of the study session was the history of the kimono. Five lecturers, including Momoko Akita, who is based in the region and is involved in kimono promotion activities, gave a lecture using a picture-story show.

There was also a game of carrying sweets using chopsticks to a Ukrainian song, as well as a kimono dressing experience at the end of the day.

Participants said "I like the kimono, it was very beautiful." and "I want to learn more Japanese so I can work."

Natalia stated that some displaced people are still crying, and even though we are so far away and safe, our hearts are not at ease. Even after four months nothing has changed. Some are suffering and I hope the invasion will end soon.
