Oiran Dochu or Courtesan parade

Oiran Dochu

The Kumamoto Oiran Dochu event, the centrepiece of the Kumamoto Castle Tsuboigawa Garden Party Autumn Banquet, was held at Sakura-no-Baba Josaien in Kumamoto City, on 30 October, where women dressed as coutesans paraded through the venue, charming the visiters.

The event was organised by an executive committee of companies and cultural organisations.
The festival resumed in May for the first time in three years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On the day, four women in colourful kimonos and taka-geta appeared.
When they demonstrated their unique walking technique, called Soto Hachi-monji, in which they tilt their toes inwards and turn them outwards, tourists were eager to take photos.

A 71-year-old woman from Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, who had come to see the festival for the first time, said: 'It was gorgeous and very good. Each oiran had a different kimono and hairstyle, and they were all beautiful'.
