THE LEATHER SCRAP KIMONO, a leather kimono created by Tomoe Shinohara, has become a hot topic, winning international advertising awards. It's now won the 2022 Tokyo ADC Award.

This work was jointly art-directed by Tomoe Shinohara and Machi Kagawa, a member of the design studio STUDEO, which she presides over, in collaboration with the Japan Tanners Association.
The edges of the leather, which would normally have to be discarded, are made to look like the ridges of a mountain, and beautiful gradations, like an ink painting, are applied to the kimono.
Shinohara worked on the production with great respect for the thoughts and technical skills of the craftsmen who have carefully passed on traditional craftsmanship, including tanner Ito Sangyo and sewing company Refans in Soka City, Saitama Prefecture.

The completed series of creations, including graphics and video, attracted attention both domestically and internationally, winning a Silver Award in the Brand Communication Design category and a Bronze Award in the Fashion Design category at the 101st New York ADC Awards.
Following this achievement, the company was also highly acclaimed in Japan's prestigious advertising awards.

THE LEATHER SCRAP KIMONO was produced as a project for the Japan Tanners Association website 'Leather KIMONO', for which the Figaro Japan editorial department of CCC Media House is responsible for content production.
CCC Media House has been involved in the PR business of Japanese leather for some time, and Shinohara has her own series "TOMOE SHINOHARA MAKING" on madameFIGARO.jp, where she continues to communicate about her creations.
This collaboration was made possible by the combination of her sincere attitude towards materials, which she has always valued in her creations, and the thoughts of leather craftspeople.

Talented creators with ties to both Shinohara and Figaro Japon, such as Keiko Honda, who styled the kimnos, and Ryoji Inagaki, who handled hair and make-up for the model shoots, also participated.

The Tokyo ADC Award are Japan's premier advertising awards, reflecting cutting-edge trends in Japanese advertising and graphic design.
This year, the awards are open to works that were presented, used or published in Japan between May 2021 and June 2022.
Out of approximately 6,000 entries, 10 award-winning works were selected from the general public and non-ADC members after a rigorous review by 82 art directors in Japan.

The award-winning works, including THE LEATHER SCRAP KIMONO, will be exhibited at Creation Gallery G8 in Ginza, Tokyo, from Tuesday 1 November, where actual leather kimono works will be shown.
A talk event with Tokyo ADC member Hiroaki Nagai will also be held on Wednesday 16 November at the same venue.
This is a great opportunity to meet the works.
