Maiko
On 31 August, maiko and geiko in Gion Odori, a stage performance held every November by Gion Higashi, one of the five Kyoto Kagai or entertainment districts, had their photographs taken for a brochure at Gion Kaikan in Higashiyama Ward, Kyotto, the venue for the performance.
The colourful kimonos created a festive atmosphere at the scene.

It will be held for the first time in three years due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
This year's performance is "Somin Shorai Sue Yayoi", which is a legendary tale to ward off the plague. The Story incorporates the Gion Festival, which is held to pray for the end of the plague, and the "Karuta Tori (Karuta card-taking game)" performed at the Yasaka Shrine on the first visit there in the New Year.

A maiko, Hikari Mansai, 18, who will be performing in the Gion Odori for the first time, told an interview: "I'm happy because I haven't been able to do it for two years. I'll train a lot so that it'll be a wonderful performance."
