Exhibitions Commemorating 50th Anniversary of Reversion of Okinawa

Shuri Castle

The special exhibition "Ryukyu", commemorating the 50th anniversary of the reversion of Okinawa to Japan, is held at the Heiseikan of the Tokyo National Museum until 26 June (Sun), 2022.

It'll then tour to the Kyushu National Museum from 16 July (Sat) to 4 Sep (Sun).

Once an independent state as the Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawa has passed through modernisation since the Meiji era and World War 2, and still carries on its history and culture today.

The special exhibition "Ryukyu" introduces the formation of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the formation and transmission of its culture through the display of valuable treasures from the 400-year history of the Ryukyu King, Sho clan, excavated artifacts and historical documents showing the trading activities of the so-called Old Ryukyu period, and replica reconstructions that revive the traditional techniques of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The exhibition features a number of national treasures handed down to the Sho clan, the kings of Ryukyu Kingdom. The exhibition includes jade crowns decorated with gold, silver and crystal, costumes of various materials and techniques worn by the royal family, and lacquerware and ceramics that decorated Shuri Castle, the heart of the kingdom.
