Classes in High School Wearing Self-Made Yukata

Yukata

High school students learn about the age-old Japanese wisdom of "keeping cool in the severe heat."
Students studying clothing design at a high school in Okayama spent the day wearing yukata they had made themselves.

"Yukata Day" at Okayama Prefectural Koyo High School.

Fifty-seven second and third year students from the Clothing Design Course dress themselves with the help of their teachers and classmates.
They started this last year to provide an opportunity for students to show off the yukata they made in class when they were in first year.

The pupils attended the classes in yukata, which they were proud to wear, having done everything themselves, from choosing the fabric to cutting and sewing the yukata together.

Students said "I don't usually spend time in a yukata, so it's something new." and "The most difficult part was the curve at the back of the neck, where the fabric was pulled out. I think I did a lot better."

Teacher who taught said "We talk a little about clothing and culture in class, so I really want them to be interested in kimono, and hopefully some of them will go in that way, I mean towards kimono.

An unusual school life spent in yukata, which are cool to look at. It's a Japanese clothing culture that they learn by wearing it.
